With locking pliers clamped on the torsion tube winding bars are used to wind the springs tighter to increase tension.

To adjust torsion spring tension the door is locked in the down position.
This is accomplished by opening the garage door as fully as possible until it hits the stop bolt on the track.
To adjust your garage door s side mounted springs first open your door fully and secure it in place with a c clamp below the bottom roller.

Once your garage door is secured remove the spring hook from the track hanger which will allow you to move the hook and adjust the spring s tension.
When you count 30 turns you should know that you have completed the remaining five turns.
When two springs are used both sides should be adjusted the same.
Hold the garage door.
Usually you will have two springs on your door which will be color coded.
Most of the time the end on the right hand wind is red and the left and wind is black as you can see on the graphic below.
Step 1 look for a reddish cone on the torsion spring.
In most cases you can determine the wind of your garage door torsion spring by using the color coded system on the cones at the end of the spring.
This completes a total of seven spring turns adequate for a standard garage door.
If the garage door isn t opening or closing properly then check the tension on the torsion springs for needed adjustments you may need to have someone helping you to adjust the torsion spring because it can be potentially dangerous.
Adjustments should be made in 1 4 turn increments.
