The problem is either due to a blocked path between the sensors dirty eyes loose wires at the sensors or at the motor head or just bad sensors. If one or both of the lights are off check the fuses breakers and plugs for problems. You will find that the door will only move an inch or so in the close direction and reverse. A common cause of a malfunctioning garage door sensor is lack of power supply.

If not re engage it. Check for and clear any obstructions in its way. If both the red source and green sensor lights are on and not blinking then the door mechanism is working properly. If you find the lights turned off in one or both the sensors it indicates that there is a problem in power supply.

Cycle the garage door through the opening and closing actions using the control on the garage wall or the remote unit from a vehicle. The first is an obstruction in the path of the door and therefore in the path of the sensor. If it is be sure that the lenses are mounted five to six inches from the floor on either side of the garage door opening.
